SWIMMING POOL INDUSTRY VOICE

Bruce Brooks is a board member and former CEO of Fluidra. With a background in leading global businesses, he has played a key role in shaping the swimming pool sector. Known for his strategic vision and people-first approach, Bruce has long championed the role of swimming pools in enriching lives and strengthening communities.
Bruce, you’ve mentioned that pools played a big role in your life growing up. What do you remember most?
Honestly, it was the sense of togetherness. I learned to swim at our community YMCA, and the neighborhood pool quickly became the heart of summer. It didn’t matter who you were - once you were in the water, everyone was equal. There was a joy in that simplicity.
Why do you think swimming pools have such a unique ability to bring people together?
Pools cut through social and cultural boundaries. They’re natural gathering places. Whether it’s kids learning to swim, neighbors cooling off or seniors doing water aerobics, there’s something about water that connects people. It’s one of the few places where generations genuinely mix.
What other benefits do you see pools offering communities?
So many. They teach critical life skills like water safety. They support health and wellbeing: physically, mentally and emotionally. They even create jobs and bring people into careers they might not have considered. Pools are more than just fun - they’re foundational.
What would you say to someone who sees pools as a luxury, not a necessity?
I’d say look again. A swimming pool can be a sanctuary, a classroom, a training ground or a community center. When designed and used well, it’s a space that supports everyone. That’s not a luxury - that’s something every community deserves.
